Starting Stardew Valley? A Calm Checklist for Your First Few Days

2026-10-23

Guides & Tips / Beginner

Your first Stardew Valley days do not need to be a speedrun. Start with a farm small enough to look after, leave room to explore, and learn what the game is asking of you before trying to do everything at once. This is a beginner checklist based on documented mechanics, with our suggested priorities clearly separated from the rules.

First, check which farm you chose

The Getting Started guide notes an important exception: most farm maps begin with 15 parsnip seeds, while Meadowlands begins with a coop, two chickens and hay. If your starting supplies differ from another beginner's video, your save may be perfectly normal.

1. Clear a small working patch

Our suggestion: make enough room for your immediate planting and a clear walking route. You do not need to turn the whole map into bare ground on day one. A modest patch is easier to maintain while you learn where tools live and how long chores take.

For a crop-based start, use the hoe to prepare soil, plant your seeds, then use the watering can. Crops need water to grow; skipping water stops growth rather than instantly killing the plant. Refill the can at a suitable body of water.

2. Give each day one main outing

After essential farm work, pick a single plan: explore town, try fishing, gather forage or follow a quest. This is a planning suggestion, not a required order. A useful first-session goal is to learn a route and return without feeling rushed, rather than to maximize every coin.

3. Treat energy as your daily budget

Watch the energy meter before committing to another large clearing job. Food can restore energy, but inspect an item's listed effect before eating it. Build a habit of returning home with time to spare instead of scheduling every activity up to the last possible moment.

4. Read the television before heading out

The in-game TV offers weather information, luck, tips and cooking information through its programs. Check it as part of a short morning routine, then decide what suits the day. You do not have to memorize a calendar guide before your farm can be enjoyable.

A simple repeatable routine

  1. Check information at home and decide today's main activity.
  2. Complete the farm chores your starting map needs.
  3. Take one outing, keeping energy and return time in mind.
  4. Leave a short plan for tomorrow instead of trying to solve the entire season.

Exact control prompts and available features can vary by platform and version. This guide does not promise an optimal profit route or claim a hands-on test of every platform.
